Just posting now the last one or two that I had pre prepared.
Hope Haven – Transitional Girl’s Home Azerbaijan
Background & context
The collapse of the Soviet Union, together with many other challenges, has left Azerbaijan in increased poverty and facing social and economic degradation. Children have particularly suffered from the effects of conflict and the USSR collapse, and UNICEF has reported that over the last decade there has been a 20% increase in the number of children living in state institutions. Prospects for those leaving orphanages are bleak, and especially for those with disabilities who face stigma and rejection. Many end up in adult institutions for the rest of their lives, when with the right support and training they could be taught to care for themselves. Our partner organisation, Purposeful Youth, runs a transitional home for girls leaving state institutions to help them become self-sufficient. However, thus far they have been using rented accommodation which has proved expensive and is preventing the work from growing further.
Project aims
The overall goal of the project is to strengthen efforts for achieving a reliable future for vulnerable children living in residential institutions in Azerbaijan.
The immediate aim is to build a half-way (transitional) house which will serve to
• create a stable home environment for girls leaving state institutions, where they can learn to live independently in the context of a supportive and structured community
• facilitate the girls’ transition from the institution to independent life, typically over the course of around 2-4 years each
• be a temporary shelter for orphans with serious disabilities, where they can receive appropriate care and services
Project description
The home will take approximately 6-8 months to construct, and is being backed by funding from several organisations including SP. The home will provide care for 6-8 girls at a time (on a medium-term basis, to aid their transition) as well as short term care for girls with severe disabilities. Additionally, the resident girls will be involved in volunteering at the local orphanage, thus benefiting the children there. Former residents of Hope Haven will continue to receive ongoing mentoring and partial participation in the Hope Haven community as
needed.
Expected Outcomes
A new, permanent, purpose-built building will be constructed for Hope Haven, providing for 6-8 girls in transition at a time, as well as providing care for severely disabled orphans locally, reaching out into the local state-run orphanage and providing ongoing mentoring and support to girls leaving the home who move on into independent life.
