Living Thankfully

holy experience

Here is my entry for this week's Thankfulness journey, in no particular order . . . .

281. Being able to get an appointment with the doctor when I needed it and being able to see one of the female Drs at our practice.

282. Safe journey home for eldest son, on the train, so that he could spend some time with his grandmother (my mother in law) who is ill.

283. Her other son had managed to get one of the beds downstairs for her but had also managed to buy a stair lift off ebay so that when she is feeling up to it she can go upstairs too.

284. He has enough handyman skills to fit the stair lift himself.  My hubby and youngest both had fun trying it out!

285. Good visit with mother in law and her excitement when the district nurse showed her how to do her own injections and she got it right first time.

286. Safe journey back to his internship for eldest.

287. Bumping into a friend in town.

288. Awesome bargains in the reduced fridge when popping into the supermarket on the way home from an evening out.  Sirloin steaks and silverside joints for 1/4 of the normal price!

289. When it rained on a morning I was attending a school assembly by bus, it was one of the schools that is close to the bus stop and I was only in the rain for a few minutes.

290. Opportunity to combine Bible study with the creativity I love.

291. Almost 90 women on facebook reading the bible through in a year together.  Each reading the plan of their choice in the version of their choice but doing it TOGETHER!

292. The opportunity to tackle the mess that eldest's bedroom had become since he left and turn it into a room that will be his bedroom when he is home but also my craft room.  THAT is a project that will take months, but watch out for further updates.

Bible Study and Lino Cutting

Interesting title huh?  How am I going to combine those two?

Well, yesterday I was listening to the sermon at the church my son is interning at, and one of the things that was mentioned is that they want the whole church to study the same passage this week and then they are going to use some of the responses as part of the sermon on Sunday.  The thing that they want people to do is watch for 3 things within the passage.

A LIGHT BULB: Something that shines from the passage and takes your attention/impacts you.

A QUESTION MARK: Anything that is difficult to understand or a question you would like to ask the Lord about the passage.

AN ARROW: A personal application for your life.

Now, that is not the church I attend, it is much too far away and I love the church which God has us in right now, BUT I love that set of things to look out for.  In fact I want to use it in my regular journaling, and was wondering how to make sure I remember what the three things are, each time I come to it. Yes, I could print it out and make a bookmark but I wanted something a little more creative.
So I pulled out my lino cutter and some pieces of lino and got to work:

Things didn't quite go according to plan and I forgot that I needed to reverse the image of the question mark in order for it to be the right way round when finished.  I then started again and made the same mistake ARGH!  Finally, after getting up and going to do something else for a while I got it right!  Anyone want a back to front question mark stamp?

Here they are in use:

I'm thinking that I want to mount them on something, maybe some scraps of wood or something to make them easier to use. I'm sure there is something around here I can use.

New Things Check In

It's been just over 2 weeks since I last checked in on how my Theme of New is going for the year.

There have been a couple of NEW things since then,
The first is another creative pursuit and actually has a number of NEWS within it.
I made myself a handbag.  A fully lined handbag, I've never done that before, so in itself that was new.
I made the front panel using some techniques I have picked up from Art journaling, spraying inks and then rubber stamping.  I've never done either of those things on fabric before.

And I made a fully lined, zipped pocket inserted into the lining of the bag, again something I had not done before.

The 2nd NEW thing is kind of related to that, in that it came through sharing those photos on facebook.  This is still ONLY a possibility, no concrete plans BUT our church has a connection with missionaries to one of the gypsy communities in Romania.  She commented on the photos on facebook saying she wished I would go out there and teach some of these projects to the gypsy girls because they are looking for projects for the girls to be able to make so that they can sell them.

I've talked to just a couple of people at church about it and am certainly thinking it might be possible.

The first problem is that my passport expired in November, so I have begun the process of applying for a new one and am waiting for those forms to come in the post.  I don't think my photo will have changed that much since my last one, my hair is a lot longer, but that is all, so it should just be a case of getting a new photo, signing the form and posting it back off with birth certificates etc.  Maybe I'll pay the extra to get it checked at the post office before I send it.  So that's £77.50 I think, plus another £8.17 if I do the post office thing, GULP!

Living Thankfully

holy experience

Here is my entry for this week's Thankfulness journey, in no particular order . . . .

267.  Although my mother in law is seriously ill in hospital an hour or so away it is an hour in the same direction as my husband works so he is able to visit on his way home from work with just a slight detour.

268.  Mother in law is hopefully coming home later this week.

269.  Eldest son has got a day off work Thursday and his usual free days are Friday and Saturday so he is able to come hoe for a few days and visit.

270.  Even though there are only 2 days to go until he is coming home we were able to get Advance tickets that brought the cost of the train down from £45 to £23.

271.  Since eldest has to be back down there for morning service on Sunday (he is working as an intern at a church), hubby is going to borrow a company car over the weekend and we will all travel down first thing Sunday morning to be there for morning service.

272.  Had great fun making my birthday gift to me this last week.

273.  Got a reasonable price on some more fabric so that I can extent the leftover fabric from 1 more bag to 2 more bags.  Hoping to then sell them and recoup some of the cost of my bag!

274.  A very interesting comment on my facebook when I shared photos of that bag, from a missionary acquaintance in Romania.  Have since spoken to a couple of people at church, only very briefly and think something could definitely come of it . . .

275.  Youngest is done with exams for another few months, so that's one less stress.

276.  Even though we are a one car family for a while again I still have my free bus pass, and that is helping me get around while hubby is at work.

277.  Awesome time celebrating my 40th birthday with church friends, after church this week.  Complete with me calling everyone into the food by blowing a kids toy trumpet and yelling "grubs up!"

278.  Some fantastic birthday gifts and apparently a couple still to come in the post.

279.  Lots of cards and wonderful messages on facebook!

280.  FAB AT 40!  THIS is going to be a good year, a blessed year.

My Birthday Gift to Me

A couple of weeks ago I was looking for a sewing project that I would also be able to combine with some of the skills I have learnt in Art Journaling.

I found a great tutorial for a fully lined messenger bag but felt it was just a tiny bit bigger than what I wanted.  I really didn't drop the measurements by much, just took the main pieces from 11 by 12 inches to 10 by 11 inches.  It has come out more or less the perfect size for what I wanted.

I also wanted to make the strap adjustable, rather than a fixed length, so I used another tutorial for that.  This meant I could wear the bag either with a longer strap diagonally across my body

or with a shorter strap on one shoulder.

I bought the fabric from IKEA, quite a heavyweight fabric, but just what I wanted.  Well, I had been hoping to use the cream for decorating to make the front panel but they had no cream so I settled for the white.  I decorated the front panel before making the bag up.  I made sure to leave just enough space at the sides for the seams and not to go right into the bottom corners because I would be curving them.  However I foorgot to account for the fact that the front panel also goes over the top of the bag.  This meant I would lost part of the image I had worked on, if I made up the bag as in the tutorial.  So I added another piece to the top of the front panel, which made the front panel image all appear on the front, but come further down the front.

I used diluted inks to spray the front panel. Some of them I added mica powders to. Then I used permanent inks (I think it's Archival in Maroon) to stamp the words and the angel image. I filled in the angel image using some glitter pens.

I also decided not to use two different fabrics for the rest of the bag as in the tutorial, but just the one brown.  So, the underneath of the flap is brown, not white.

The two pockets there are plenty roomy enough for any essentials you might need to carry with you, such as chocolate caramel digestives!

There are two matching pockets on the back of the bag, which are just a little bit deeper than the ones under the front flap.

When you lift the front flap there is a zipper to keep everything in the main pocket safe and secure.

The main pocket has plenty of room for my journal etc

And also has a fully lined, zipped, inner pocket too.

All in all a project I am very pleased with.

New Things Check In

So a week or so ago I wrote about my theme for 2011, New!  I figured it would be good to check in every now and again with an update on whether I have managed to do anything new during that time.

Yes, a few things NEW.
Firstly in my art journal I used something that was going to go in the trash, I used the foil off an after dinner mint, as part of a page.  See all those bits of gold on the right hand page?

Then I did an assembly at a school that is new to my regular assemblies. I have done an assembly there before for Operation Christmas Child, in my role as volunteer presenter with them, but never one of my regular assemblies that are what I do for my job with my church. This school is in walking distance from my house, and the assembly went well. Some of the assemblies I do are not at all interactive but this one is and so far it seems to be going well. I had to make a prop for the assembly and managed to do that with things I already had, rather than having to go and buy anything.

I have read through the bible in a year before but on my own, never as part of a group and this year I am doing it as part of a group on facebook.  We're each reading whatever version we want to and using the "in a year" plan that suits us best but coming together on facebook and discussing, it's amazing.  In fact one of the things I want to do today is maybe ready a bit further than my readings for today so I can get a bit ahead so that if I have to miss a day then it won't put me behind my plan.

Also Hubby and I sat down with the calendar a couple of nights ago and pre planned date nights for 5 months!  We have never done that before, always planning week by week.  The trouble with planning week by week is that it can often get missed as life gets away from us.  We know eating out is expensive and there are always reasons to eat out on nights other than date night such as family events and so on, so we don't want to spend too much on date night.  I have done themed date night meals in the past, both Indian and Chinese, I have a little bit of dishware that goes well with each of those themes and occasionally will make a few paper decorations to go with the theme as well as making a spotify playlist of music from that nation. I think I will be having to do some research on both music and recipes as these are the themes we have over the next 5 months:
Australian
Chinese
American (for groundhog day)
Maylasian
French
Welsh
Pancakes (for Shrove Tuesday)
Irish
South African (must ask our South African friends at church for ideas)
Fun food (for April fools day)
Mexican
Japanese
Jewish (the week fo Passover)
Royal Wedding
Greek
Italian
Vietnamese

Finally something NOT QUITE new in that I had done it before but a long time ago.  I have started keeping my thankfulness journal again.  A separate journal that i keep on my nightstand and write in before bed most nights.  I try and write at least 5 things that I am thankful for in that day.  It is a really good way to end the day and is proving useful in reminding me of all the blessings I DO have in my life.
The last entry in it before I restarted it was 2007 and that was only 1 entry, so a failed restart, because the entry before that was 2001!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  10 years ago that I last did this consistently, so I think it kind of counts as NEW.

Living Thankfully

holy experience

Here is my entry for this week's Thankfulness journey, in no particular order . . . .

250.  The clock that fell on my head at church yesterday did no damage.  But does make me wonder if God has something to say about TIME.  hmmmmmm GRIN!

251.  Day 7 of eating better and things are still going to plan!

252.  The upside to my mother in law being in hospital for her clot is that she is getting a number of tests THIS WEEK that she would have waited until April for on an out patient basis.

253.  Because of where my husband works a visit to see his mom in hospital is kind of on his way home, just a bit of a detour.

254.  Eldest got back to his internship in Bath safely.

255.  Bible in a year group on facebook.  Going really well, lots of chat, lots of discussion.

256.  Day 8 of bible in a year and I am on track.

257.  Day 7 of exercise and the first day I have done nothing INTENTIONAL (yet!  There is still time).  Going to keep on keeping on.

259.  Got an awesome recipe journal from my Secret Santa at church.

260.  On a day when I was feeling a bit overwhelmed, hubby took it upon himself to take down the Christmas decorations and getting them put away.

261.  When I needed a prop for the school assembly talks I do for my job, I had all the craft supplies already on hand, including a GIANT envelope.

262.  My youngest son did AWESOME on his GCSE mock (practice) and proved to his teacher just how good he is.

263.  2 reminders this week that usually difficult people are not being difficult on purpose, particularly those close to us.

264.  Hubby's brother was able to be at the meeting with the medical team for mother in law.  He is a pharmacist so has a certain amount of medical knowledge through that and both he and his wife are cancer survivors.

265.  Test run of a printing binding project went wrong.  Why am I thankful?  Because it prevented me having wasted the time, energy and supplies of doing the full run straight away.

266.  Discovered a new setting on Dance Dance Revolution that I had not known about before that allows me to get my workout done much quicker.

Pork Stir Fry

Here we have another of our photo recipes!

PORK STIR FRY
2 tbsp oil
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped (we used garlic in a jar, 1tsp for each clove)
1 tsp grated fresh root ginger (we used ginger in a jar, 1 tsp)
1 chilli, deseeded and finely chopped.  (Either wear gloves when you do this, or cover your hands with veg oil before and wash off afterwards.  These methods prevent you being left with chilli on your hands, which you can then get in your eyes or whatever.)
1 red pepper, cored, deseeded and cut into strips.
3 carrots, cut into strips
1 large onion, sliced
250g pork, cut into cubes
1 courgettes, sliced
1 small broccoli head, divided into florets

Sauce:
2 tbsp soy sauce
2tbsp orange juice
1 tsp tomato puree
1 tsp vinegar
1 tsp brown sugar.

1.  Prepare your vegetables.

2.  Here you can see some extra leaves.  That's because I decided to add Pak Choi as well, because there was some reduced in the supermarket.

3.  If you can get it, just chop the root end off, cut the firm part into smaller pieces and leave the green leafy parts fairly whole.

4.  Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan.

5.  Add the garlic, ginger and chilli.  I also added the pak choi firmer pieces here.  You only want to soften and warm these, not brown them.

6.  Add in the pepper, carrots, onion and pork.

7.  Stir fry over a medium to high heat for about 5 minutes.

8.  Then add the courgettes and the broccoli.  We also added the leaves of the pak choi here.

9.  Mix the sauce ingredients together and stir into the stir fry.  Allow to bubble a little and toss the vegetables in the sauce to coat.

10.  Serve with noodles or rice.  When I took the photos for this recipe we were using microwave rice.  Not the cheapest option at supermarket prices, at all, but very reasonable in stores such as home bargains.

New Things Art Journal Page

So these:

Became this:

Invisible Seeds

I'm surprised my facebook posts about planting Invisible Seeds didn't bring more questioning looks than they did.  Let me explain . . .

My job has me in local primary schools (ages 5 - 11) giving assembly talks.
This month's assembly is titled Invisible Seeds and needed some props.  Thankfully I had everything I needed to make the props right here.  Invisible seeds obviously need an seed packet.  Now I don't know if you are aware of this but invisible seeds are huge, so they need a very big seed packet.  Actually it needs to be huge so the kids at the back can see it clearly, but I like my version better.  I was wondering where on earth to start the other day, and starting scooting around my craft desk to see what I could find.

Have you ever bought craft stuff from QVC, that comes in those BIG flat cardboard envelopes?  Well, I NEVER buy them at full prices but we have a QVC outlet store not far away and I have been known to pick up one or two things in there.  And what I found under my desk was that I had kept the big envelopes from my last visit, IN CASE I MIGHT NEED THEM.  See, don't tell me hoarding is bad, this time, it worked!

One HUGE envelope and one set of seeds.  Each seed was printed on a sheet of A4 card and then cut out.  To give you an idea of just how big invisible seeds and therefore invisible seed packets are, here's a photo with a 12 inch ruler included.

I was wondering how to decorate this seed packet and then remembered that I had A3 size cartridge paper left over from another project, so I got one of those out and measured it up, PERFECT FIT.

I decorated it with a set of HUGE foam alphabet stamps and versacolour ink pads.

And here is the final result:
One packet of invisible seeds

Yes, I made a couple of mistakes and had to cover those areas up with labels or paper and work again over the top of them but I am sure the children won't notice.

I wish I could get someone to take a decent photo of me using this in assembly to show you, but I go on my own. So other than trusting teachers who I only see once a month to take a decent photo, I don't really know how to make that happen.

Of course you can't really grow invisible flowers from invisible seeds, in invisible pots full of invisible soil. You can't water them with invisible water and hope they will grow. But you can grow invisible seeds in your own life and in the lives of those around you! What seed will you grow this week?

Oh and when it came to clean up I just stamped each letter I had used over and over on the back on the envelope and I kind of like the result. Might use this technique in an art journal page sometime.

Does Someone Need to Read This as we Start a new Year?

----------------------------------------
From "Captivating" by John and Stasi Eldredge
I know I am not alone in this nagging sense of failing to measure up, a feeling of not being good enough AS A WOMAN. Every woman I've ever met feels it - something deeper than just the sense of failing at what she does. An underlying gut feeling of failing at who she IS.
I AM NOT ENOUGH, and I AM TOO MUCH at the same time, Not pretty enough, not thin enough, not kind enough, not gracious enough, not disciplined enough. But too emotional, too needy, too sensitive, too strong, too opinionated, too messy. The result is SHAME, the universal companion of most women.
----------------------------------------

Back to me:
The two greatest fears of a woman's heart, "I am not enough" and "I am too much".

How closely does this relate to our struggles with weight.
Society, doctors, and the enemy of our hearts tells us that we are
Too fat
too big
too greedy
too lazy
TOO MUCH!

Not thin enough
not pretty enough
not disciplined enough
not beautiful enough
don't exercise enough
don't move enough
don't care enough
NOT ENOUGH!

And the truth?
The truth is we are LOVED, we are ENOUGH, and we are NOT too much.
We are loved by a heavenly father who cannot love us even the tiniest bit more than He does right now, nor can he love us the tiniest bit less than He does right now. It is not possible because He IS love.
In Him we ARE enough, we are enough for Him, and that big long list of things that society, family, friends, governments, churches, tell us we SHOULD be doing, are very often not on His list of what he longs for us to be doing, those things that keep us busy, too busy to focus on ourselves in a right way, too busy to focus on Him. And His heart breaks to see what we have done to ourselves.

He is not angry with us because of what we have done to our bodies with weight, he is heartbroken by it. And there is no guilt that he puts on us with that. He understands totally the situations, events, emotions that brought us to this place and he longs for us to turn from those behaviours and start to live in a way that loves our bodies again.

He is not standing, with a big stick waiting to punish us for being overweight or obese.
He is standing, waiting for us to run to Him, pour out all our troubles and emotions at his feet, where he can pick us up, set us on the right track and encourage us and love us.

IN HIM we are ENOUGH and we are NOT too much.

A People MADE for Relationship

This piece was written in April 2009 in response to something written by my friend Dana.  In that post she talks about the fact that we as Christians are all called to live in community, not just so we can impact the world, but for own betterment.
Things have changed for us since then and not only are we now in a small group again but we are leading it.  I think all of this still stands:

I quote:
" As much as God works in us to transform us from the inside out, He gave us something more to refine us. He gave us each other. The community of Christ is meant to be a tool not only as the hands and feet of Christ to the world, but for the betterment of each other through shared lives, shared work, shared struggles and shared encouragement."

She obviously had no idea how timely this post would be for me.
I have really been struggling with the whole relationships issue over recent months.
Because of various things that happened, hubby and I found ourselves still in the same church but not in a small group. We do go to a soaking group most weeks, but lets be honest, that involves maybe 15 - 20 minutes of relationship building and then the rest of the night is spent sleeping, (well not necessarily sleeping, but it's interaction direct with Father rather than with each other). I LOVE soaking, I adore it, but I need something more. I need relationship.
I am not blaming anyone at our church for the situation in which we find ourselves, it is not down to people, it is down to circumstances that have arisen.

Over the last couple of months I have begun to understand and to formulate in my head why this is so important to me, and why I am feeling so lost without it.
I had already come to the realisation that a big part of it was about encouragement. I know one of the things I am called to do is to encourage people, I LOVE doing it, but unless you know people, unless you're aware of what's going on in their lives, that becomes a difficult thing to do well. I also was aware that I NEED encouragement. When I am facing struggles, when I am facing challenges, doubts, issues of sin even, I need encouragement, I need someone who sees what is happening in my life and says "Come on, you CAN DO IT!"

Then, on Sunday morning, before I read Dana's post, I came to a further realisation about my need for relationship.
On Sunday, we had baptisms. 5 people making that public declaration of their relationship with Jesus! AWESOME morning, absolutely amazing, and it made me cry! One of the things that happens at our church when a person gets baptised is that after they have been dunked in the water people pray for them publicly, or bring bible verses they believe god wants to speak to that person through, or pictures, visions, or other "words" from Father God. It's an incredible time as you listen to what God has in store for these people.
I sat there and I cried, because I realised that another big thing about small groups, whether that be an organised group within your church, or whether it be just a group of people that you gather together yourself, is that you are able to speak into each others lives.

Before we left the group we were in before, the group that we were leading and needed to take a break from, that was one of the things we used to do a lot of, praying for each other and speaking into each others lives, what we believed Father God was saying and showing to us.

Dana explains it this way:
" This does not mean that need to let all 1,600 members of my home church in on all my business all the time. It does mean that I have gathered around myself a few groups of people who know me and in spite of that, love me; whose counsel and advice I trust and cherish and most importantly; who love the Lord and want for all of us to be more like Him. It is these people that I can trust to honestly evaluate my words and my behaviours as Christ's ambassador. It is these people that I can trust to hold me up with Truth and not stroke my ears with pretty words. It is these people who sharpen me as I strive to live in community with people who are sometimes very unlike me."

So yes, those aren't just nice, sweet, "God wants to bless you with THIS . . . " type words. It was also a time where we were able to be honest with each other, where we were able to get a spiritual kick in the pants from people we trusted as we were honest with them and they were honest with us.

BUT that was the realisation of Sunday morning, that I am also missing out on the opportunity to have others whom I know and trust spiritually, speak into my life, and to do the same in return.

And all along I have known that WE ARE A PEOPLE WHO ARE MADE FOR RELATIONSHIPS, and women, even more so than men, we are made with this capacity to love and to share, and when that is not used, is not filled, we have a hole, something is missing.

And yes, I DO have relationships online, that other people in the church might not have, but over the last few months, those have changed, those have drifted, and are not the same as they once were. So here I am. Totally acknowledging and agreeing with what Dana wrote. STILL desperate to be in close relationship with a small group of people. Willing to work on creating that for ourselves, (I have worked on getting the "visitor" areas of our home suitable for visitors over the past few weeks and discussed with hubby last night who we might invite for dinner over the coming weeks), but not really knowing where to start.

I'll finish with a final quote from Dana's post:
"We spend a great deal of time focusing on the fluffy, friendly part of our Christian relationships and while we do so, we rob ourselves of one of our most valuable earthly assets. Accountability among believers is not always comfortable, easy or fun, but it is certainly one of the most loving things we can do for each other. Building a person up doesn't merely consist of words that puff up and make us feel good. It includes cutting out the weaker parts so that the entire structure is more sound. It is sometimes painful, heartbreaking, backbreaking work. Who better to entrust it to than those whose hearts are grafted with our own into the heart of the Giver of Life?"

Prom Season

OK so it's nto quite Prom season yet, but it will be upon us soon.
Did you know that Prom is something that now happens over here in the UK?  It's true.

My son is in his last year of compulsory school and will be attending Prom this summer.  Choosing the right outfit is important for these events.

We're blessed in that my son actually wears the same size clothes as my dad, who happens to have a tuxedo! Smart black trousers, white tux jacket, awesome white shirt AND he'll sort out some cufflinks to go with the shirt.  My son wants to personalise his look just a little bit and we can easily do that with some new shoes AND an awesome bowtie!  Will he choose a tie that grabs attention or one that lets him sink into the background a bit?  Who knows, but I doubt it will take him as long to decide as some of the girls going to Prom will spend over their outfits.

Remembering Nattie

Who was Nattie? I knew her first through an email group for Christian journalers, and later, much better through a group called Women At Home.

Yes, I only ever knew her online, and certainly there were others who knew her so much better than I did, but I will not resort to calling her an online friend, as opposed to an IRL friend, because that takes something from what she was (and other women on w@h are) to me. She was and they are In Real Life Friends. They are REAL, they exist, and they are there for me.

I am blessed to have known Nattie. She had struggled in various areas of her life but always came up smiling, always pointing us back to the Father. Nattie, I miss you!

To finish I want to share something I wrote on W@H back in 2008. Someone had asked us to imagine what Nattie had been doing in heaven that past year. There's nothing more to add, so I'll leave you with this:

I see her dancing with THE Father.

AS a daddy dances with his daughter.

I see her laughing and playing with him, sitting in his lap, talking about all the times she had to do that without the two of them in the same room, when she had to believe he was there, holding her.

I see her watching the hard situations that some of us are facing, and watch her talking to the father about it, watch her crying WITH HIM, over their pain, and then smiling again because the father is telling her of the plans he has for them and how he is going to bring glory out of the darkness that the enemy has tried to bring to them! I see her even laughing at those plans he is sharing with her, because they are so outrageous in grace.

I also see her reading, and I see her talking with authors who have also made their way to heaven, as if she and they were old friends. And I see her, watching the keen readers amongst us, seeing what they are reading and almost at moments, leaning over their shoulders, as it were, to get a peek at the current book of the moment.

Living Thankfully

holy experience

Here is my entry for this week's Thankfulness journey, in no particular order . . . .

241.  A Sunday spent in Pyjamas.

242.  Art journaling - the clarity and insight it brings, the fun it is and the gorgeous results.

243.  Bible in a Year group on facebook, lots of existing friends and lots of people to get to know too.

244.  My theme for the year for 2011 - NEW

245.  A New school to my assemblies list, this coming Thursday.

246.  Hubby helped me choose and put in a new set of shelves for my art supplies.

247.  Having eldest home for a couple of weeks over Christmas.

248.  Got my birthday wish already even though my birthday isn't until January 23rd - a stand mixer!  woohoooo.  I even told hubby he can tell his male workmates he bought me a kitchen appliance for my 40th and I won't complain.

249.  2010 was the year in which I travelled to America and met some awesome people.

If you wish to participate in blogging about your list of 1000 gifts or in Thankful Thursday, head on over to a holy experience, by clicking on the banners at the top of this post.

Home Making A - Z

Aprons – Y/N? If Y, what does your favourite look like?
I have a number of aprons, but I usually only wear them when I am baking. I have a gorgeous Minnie mouse one that hubby and the kids bought me when we went to Euro Disney. I love it, very subtle and understated, but still cute, although it did shrink the first time we washed it, it's still an OK size to wear.

Baking – Favourite thing to bake
Bread, or no, maybe cookies, or hang on, what about cakes made with virtually no fat, or , or, or, well, you get the idea.

Clothesline – Y/N?
I have a rotary clothes line, but it's not quite straight and our garden (yard) is so small that there is not really all that much room for it, but I doubt we'll be using it again now until the Spring.

Doughnuts – Have you ever made them?
I have made baked doughnuts and fried doughnuts using an enriched dough from Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a day.  DELICIOUS but not at all good for you.

Every day – One home making thing you do every day
I make my bed. Well, I straighten the duvet and leave it looking at least neat in that respect. Some days that will be the only thing I get done, other days it will be one of many, but it is usually done every day.

Freezer – Do you have a separate deep freeze?
YES, we have an upright fridge in the kitchen and freezer in the dining room.

Garbage Disposal – Y/N?
Nope, the budget was limited when we redesigned the kitchen and wouldn't quite stretch to that.

Handbook – What is your favourite home making resource?
I would have to say the internet. If I need to know how to do something, I will always search on here!

Ironing – Love it or hate it? Or hate it but love the results?
HATE HATE HATE it! I hang shirts on to hangers straight from the washing machine and let them dry hung up. There are a handful of items that still need ironing after that because of either the way they are made or what they are made from. I don't wear those very often! And as for people who iron everything even down to underwear, they are just STRANGE!

Junk drawer – Y/N? Where is it?
Not enough drawers in the kitchen to have one, so junk drawer items find themselves all over the house.

Kitchen – Colour and decorating scheme
light beach wood effect cupboards. Walls are pale yellow with a light terracotta sponged over the top.

Love – What is your favourite part of home making?
Being here!  Being able to be here, having a husband who is willing to make the sacrifices necessary for me to be here.

Mop – Y/N?
I have NEVER found a mop that I think does the job well enough, not in a house with 3 blokes who seem to think anything on the floor is invisible. So if I get really frustrated with the state of the floor, I will sometimes get down on my hands and knees with a bucket of hot water and cleaner and SCRUB!  And I might need to do that tomorrow as with all the snow (and therefore dirt) that has been trodden through the last few days the mop just isn't cutting it.

Nylons – Wash by hand or in the washing machine?
I can't remember the last time I wore them, but when I do, I usually pop them into one of those net bags and wash them in the machine.

Oven – Do you use the window or open the oven to check?
Since I thoroughly cleaned the window, I usually peek through but if something is shaded by something else on the shelf above, I might take a peek by opening the door.

Pizza – What do you put on yours?
EVERYTHING! With extra cheese! Heeheee. If we're eating out we usually have the mega toppings one, whatever it is at that restaurant. If we're buying at the supermarket it will usually be meats, and if we're making at home whatever we have to hand.

Quiet – What do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment?
Surf the net, read blogs, play computer games, and sometimes watch TV but not daytime TV, I'll watch something that I have stored on our V+ box.

Recipe card box – Y/N? What does it look like?
I've tried various different things over the years and none of them have ever really stuck for any length of time. Most of the time if I am looking for a recipe that isn't in one of my books at home I'll search the net, usually at Recipe Zaar. I have our all time family favourites listed on there too.

Style of house – What style is your house?
Mid Terrace.

Tablecloths and napkins – Y/N?
Only use tablecloths for special ocassions have some reuseable and washable napkins that I made out of dishtowels (thank you Dana for that idea).

Under the kitchen sink – Organized or toxic wasteland?
Not too bad actually, although things are always disappearing back behind the pipes.

Vacuum – How many times per week?
As little as possible, it's one of my least favourite chores.

Wash – How many loads of laundry do you do per week?
Less since eldest moved away but since he bought a huge bag of dirty laundry home with him on Monday the machine has been on pretty much all the time we're up.  It is a combined washer/dryer though, so we dry in it after we've washed.

X’s – Do you keep a daily list of things to do that you cross off?
I really should, things go better when I do.

Yard – Y/N? Who does what?
I don't touch it! That is all!

Zzz’s – What is your last home making task for the day before going to bed?
D'you think if I had something like this it would be easier to get things done? Yes, probably it would, I mean that's where Fly lady starts after all. MAYBE, ONE DAY!

The Best Art Supplies Are Free Ones

A few weeks ago, hubby and I went into central London for the day.  While we were there I picked up various magazines and books which have at least one image (if not a whole book full) that I am sure I will end up using in a collage in my art journal.

3 different copies of the Covent Garden magazine. The front and back covers usually have good images, but there is little else use able other than the central spread of each one has this map

We popped into John Lewis and I grabbed their free magazine

which alongside the usual fashion spreads and other advertisements, has a few useful photos.

Also in John Lewis (or possibly Selfridges) I picked up a paint chips card where each colour is a separate piece of card attached to the main card. I am sure I am going to make something cool out of these.

But the absolute best free find of the day was when we went into the national Geographic shop and they were handing out free copies of this book.

This book is full of awesome photos, like this:

At the service station on the way home I picked up a tourist brochure.

With some nice pictures in it

but my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE items that are well, almost free, in that they had already been put in the pile of books to be given away, are these:

I'd made this big pile of books which we no longer used and in amongst it were a whole pile of books which were discards from the local library in the first place, so even when I did pay for them it was only 10p each. There are so many fantastic pictures in that book that although I no longer wanted it as a book I could not give it away, I knew I had to use it as supplies for collage.

the Narnia activity book I had paid for in a proper store but it was a discount book place so I think I had paid less than £2 for it. I love some of the images:

I am seriously thinking about not cutting it up at all but making an altered book art journal from it, using some pages or elements of pages as they are and working around them. It's decent quality paper so would work fine without gluing pages together.
